Invited Talk at JNTU
I was invited to give a talk at the Department of
Information Technology at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological
University, Hyderabad, India. I talked on
"Linux: Enticing the common users",
where I discussed the development of the Linux
GUI and how it is unfortunately mimicking the
Windows environment to attract common users,
and the disadvantages of such an approach in
the Linux domain.
Phoenix and the creation of vrlinug
On April 11, 2003, I gave a talk called Phoenix in which we started a Linux Users' Group called vrlinug in MSRIT. I gave a talk called "Why not Linux" in which, I presented the case for Linux and why students should switch operating systems. We then had a series of meets, very informal and a number of students gave talks on their experience and expertise. We also were contacted by a couple of companies and we started working on projects for them. I then started a foundation level course called “linux@userlevel”, a program aimed at introducing Linux to students of MSRIT who had no prior exposure to Linux or even an operating system.
